Cynthia Miller, PhD, LMFT, Executive Director

Cynthia Miller has a passion for supporting women in recovery. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a PhD in Addiction Psychology.  She knows from personal and professional experience the many facets of substance use disorders and recovery.  Cynthia has worked in residential inpatient settings such as Serenity Knolls and Alta Mira Recovery Programs and currently maintains a private practice.  She has seen the hope and joy recovery provides and has a deep understanding of how women’s issues in recovery are often more complex.

Cynthia has been a consistent supporter of Stepping Stone.  She has served on the Board of Directors of Stepping Stone from 2009 – 2011 and helped to orchestrate the first (and not the last) Stepping Stone Golf Tournament at the Presidio Golf Club.

Personally, Cynthia is active in the 12-Step community, enjoys playing golf (especially with her husband Donald), Pilates and travel.

Terry Hennessy, Board President

Therese “Terry” Hennessy, was elected to the Board in 2015, served as Vice President in 2016 and as President in 2017.  She also served as chair of the Anniversary Gala in 2016 and 2017.

Terry retired from several careers including Mayor and Town Council member of the City of Tiburon; Director of Community Partnerships and Legislative Analyst.

A member of the recovery community for 37 years, she has supported Stepping Stone for more than 20 years.

Jennifer Heyneman Sousae, MFT, Board Secretary

Jennifer recently joined the Stepping Stone board in 2015. She has served as Executive Director of  RHE Charitable Foundation since its inception in 2008. As a private-practice psychotherapist and past counselor for Swords to Plowshares’ veterans housing programs, Jennifer is witness to immense human resilience, and capacity for reconnection and recovery. Jennifer is fifth-generation Californian. She is a lifelong back-packer, has been a river-rafting guide and remains an enthusiastic student of the wilderness.


Holly Moore, Treasurer

Holly joined the Stepping Stone Board in 2016 and is currently serving as the Treasurer.  She is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in California and has worked at a Bay Area based CPA firm, Seiler LLP, as both an auditor and tax preparer, and is currently an Audit Manager at the Pacific Maritime Association in San Francisco.  Holly is a graduate of UC Berkeley and was a member of the marching band, which instilled in her a deep love of the Golden Bears, which continues through volunteering on campus and attending football and basketball games.  She is a native of Sonoma County but as a resident of SF for almost 10 years, is deeply honored to serve on the Board of such an important and well-established organization in the city that supports women.


Paula Beroza, Past President

Paula was elected to the Board in 2008 and has served as Treasurer, Vice President, Secretary and Co-chair of the Fundraising Committee

Paula retired in 2010 with more than 25 years of experience in investment banking, working in all aspects of corporate finance both domestically and internationally. In 2004, she co-founded Sierra Asia Partners, to provide investment banking and consulting services on cross-border transactions with China. Prior work experience includes Merrill Lynch, Salomon Brothers Inc, and Prudential Insurance Company of America.

Paula has also worked with others as a community leader, advocate and advisor. She has served on several Bay Area boards including the Association for Corporate Growth, Silicon Valley where she served from 2007 – 2010 acting as Secretary from 2009 – 2010, and Asia America Multi-technology Association where she served from 2011 – 2013.
